Sydney's Inner West
About Life is way more than a cafe, it's a wholefoods supermarket that just happens to serve amazing food and awesome organic, fair-trade coffee! And... they even have a kids menu!
The Rozelle store was the original store for what is now a wholefood revolution that has resulted in a chain of About Life stores. This is the only one in the Inner West though!
Each store is wholefoods supermarket which makes the promise that they only stock products that contain:
They just promise simplicity and goodness in every product. And it's an awesome shopping experience, fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen food and all your pantry staples are here for you in a clean, ethical, healthy form! We totally love it!
The great news is every store also has a cafe that's dedicated to inventing wholefood dishes. They taste so good, so if you need some inspiration then head down to the cafe or just sample from the slad bar where you can just fill your container and take it away!
When I drew the straw to head off to About Life I was pretty happy, I din't get the short straw this time!
The little person and I headed off for lunch and a bit of shopping. The place is cavernous, a mecca for anyone looking for a great, healthy meal and to pick up a healthy, organic version of whatever you need for dinner tonight! Or you could just fill a few containers from the Nature's Servery fresh food bar and there's not even any cooking required to produce that delicious meal! It's available all day.
I've always loved the cafe here, it has a warm, inviting feel about it and the staff are always so friendly. There's a few different areas you can choose to sit in, inside, outside or up the back and there's plenty of room for a chin wag with your mothers group.
There is a breakfast menu or a lunch menu and both are available from 7.00am to 3.00pm everyday. We were happy to see a couple of kids options for lunch, choose from a Beef Burger with Cheese, raw tomato relish and hand-cut sweet potato chips ($9) or an Eggy Rice Bowl, brown rice scrambled with free range eggs and nitrate-free bacon topped with kale ($9), it was a pretty hard choice to make with my burger lovin', rice eating, scrambled egg fan along for the ride with me! We settled on the burger and it was delicious, we paired it with an About Kids Chocolate Shake ($4.90) for a filling (for her) and fulfilling (for Mum) meal.
I chose the Barra Bento ($15.90) from an extensive menu of tasty, healthy options. Who knew you could make a Burrito out of Tumeric Beans ($14.90)! I have to say that my meal was one of the tastiest things I've had in a while, the fish just melted in my mouth, brown rice and greens were sauteed together and served with raw kimchi, it was seriously a taste sensation and I can't wait to go back again. As always I sampled the coffee - delicious, a great crema and obviously very fresh. One thing I love about this place is they cook in coconut oil, somehting which I've just started doing myself as it retains it's good properties at high temperatures unlike many other oils and it's not stored as fat but converted to energy.
I've always been a fan of About Life but it's been a while since I visited, I won't leave it so long next time when I'll go back and try not to order the same thing and force myself to try something new!
