Sydney's Inner West
A lovely cafe with excellent food, a relaxed feel and super-friendly staff.
Excelsior Jones is a little eatery tucked away on the Ashfield/Ashbury border in an old shop front, which has had a very stylish, fresh feel. We had heard great things about this cafe, and decided it was well overdue for a visit.
We dropped in with two of our kids for a late breakfast and had a really lovely time! There is such a relaxed vibe to this cafe, we were made to feel right at home. Even through the cafe was busy, there was plenty of space and quite a few families, so we weren't on high alert with our kids!
Eating options are inside or outside - I don't think you can go wrong either way.
The menu is not huge, but varied, so there is something for everyone. There is no specific kids menu (house made chicken nuggets ($10) for lunch), but the staff are extremely accommodating and happy to do what they can. The coffee is great, and the babycinos better - which is always a great start to any cafe breakfast.
To eat, we sampled the Broad Beans, Peas and Edamame which came with poached eggs and sour dough - a really pretty dish and delicious. Next was the Ricotta Hotcakes with Bacon and Canadian Maple - what's not to love about a hotcake!! The kids shared some sourdough toast and fell in love with the babycinos!
It is true that this café does not have the baby change facilities, toy box or kid’s menu that we might be looking for but that is more than made up for by the friendly attentive staff and the lovely fresh feel of the café, which makes it a great place to go for a meal or coffee, with or without kids. With two great parks nearby, Peace Park and Yeo Park, this is the start of a really nice day out.
