Sydney's Inner West
Little Tastes in St Peters, is a cafe catering for both big and little people. With an excellent, kid-friendly menu and awesome kids facilities it's a family friendly venue you don't want to miss.
Little Tastes is a little cafe with big ideas! Designed with kids firmly in mind, this cafe caters to children with their simple, tasty kids menu, excellent play area and their school holiday activities (including their very popular paint the wall!)! The big people aren't forgotten either with awesome coffee and an extensive menu of simple but tasty food.
Located next to St Peters station, opposite Sydney Park and at the tail-end of King Street, Little Tastes is easy to get to and perfectly positioned for lunch before or after a play in the park. Little Tastes also open the cafe on Saturday for birthday parties.
What a breath of fresh air! We wandered into Little Tastes last week and were bowled over by the experience. The staff - all of them - are incredibly friendly. Everyone says hello to the kids as they walk past, it's not contrived, they're just genuinely happy to be there and as a result the atmosphere in the cafe is relaxed and comfortable and very welcoming.
There's no waiting for a high chair here, they brought one to us immediately and in a matter of minutes the kids were sucking on a little frozen treat made from blended fresh fruit and nothing else!
This place is a mecca for kids of all ages. There's a great Kids Corner with toys, books and puzzles. One whole side wall of the cafe is a blackboard and they're encouraged to do some drawing on the wall if they like! The area out the back is the painting area. School holiday activities include painting the wall which is a very popular activity! There's also plenty of pram space, no tricky manoeuvres required here!
The food at Little Tastes is brilliant too, lots to choose from and it's simple, tasty food, cooked well using fresh ingredients. We ordered the Corn Fritters with Avocado Salsa and Smoked Salmon ($12) and a Mediterranean Vegetable Salad with Haloumi ($12), the kids had a good old fashioned boiled egg with toast soldiers ($4!!) and a Bubba Breakfast - egg cooked how you like it, a corn fritter, toast and a juice ($8). The food is fresh, full of flavour and it all comes at an amazing price.
Little tastes is a reflection of the philosophy of it's owner James. He ditched the corporate world for the flexibility and enjoyment of running his own business. He wanted to create a place where kids can be kids, where the food is great, simple but tasty and where families feel comfortable hanging out. He has done that in spades, we'll certainly be back. James looks after his staff and the local community - kitchen leftovers on a Saturday night go to help those sleeping rough (as do a few coffees here and there throughout the day).
James is a man with big plans too. There's going to be some school holiday activities at Little tastes (check the calendar for more information), he's planning a pop-up restaurant for early, family dinners, they will also host a cooking party if that's what you're in the market for!
Little tastes comes highly recommended by us, we'll be back. You won't find anywhere more comfortable than Little Tastes to bring the kids for breakfast or just to have a coffee (oh and maybe some mud cake), and in James own words "You don't have to clean up here!" - need we say more?
