Sydney's Inner West
Public House, Petersham is an historical pub in the heart of the Inner West. It boasts one of the best beer gardens around and also has a drive-in bottleshop, off street parking and plenty of specials.
Formerly known as The Newington, this Public House continues the theme of great food in a great atmosphere ... and dare we say it great cocktails!
Recently refurbished, Public House has an amazing courtyard area which is nicely fitted out with plenty of large tables, lots of space and an amazing pizza oven where your pizzas are made fresh and in front of you! The booths that we loved are now gone but there's still plenty of kid friendly seating with plenty of large tables both inside and out.
The great kids menu remains and as far as we know it's the only pub where you can get a Happy Meal!
The Newington was well known for it's "cook your own" options- these are now gone, but the kitchen more than makes up for it with great quality food from an interesting and varied menu.
Review April 2016:
We were initially so disappointed when the Newington changed hands but we thought we'd check out Public House, Petersham with an open mind!
We loved it! The atmosphere remains wonderful and the food was seriously some of the best pub food we've ever eaten. The menu places an emphasis on share plates (there is a small "I'm Not Sharing" menu too though). The philosophy of the Chef, Martin Cerny, is that food is made for sharing. Unfortunately it's so good you may not want to share it!
The huge wood-fired pizza oven means that your pizza is created in front of you - from scratch! If pizza's not your thing, the menu is so varied and delightful, you'll find making a decision difficult. We chose the Smoked Pork Roll ($19), divine and has a bit of a bite to it, it's on the "I'm Not Sharing" menu so comes with a choice of side and we got the Heirloom Tomato Salad which was lovely and fresh and a little bit crunchy!
We also sampled a couple of share plates including Baked Eggplant Meatballs ($15) and the Prawn and Green Pea Cakes ($19) served on a delicious, crunchy salad. The "Meatballs" were amazing, they are also available on the kids menu and will be popular!
The kids menu is really interesting, there's no deep fried chicken nuggets here but instead choose from Rump Steak, Chicken Burger, Cheese Burger or a Pizza with Tomato, Basil and Mozzarella. All kids meals are $10 or choose one in a Happy Meal for $17 and you get an ice-cream and toy. All kids meals also come with a soft drink.
There's nothing soft about the big kids drinks though, the cocktails are amazing and I can highly recommend the Fig Supreme, it comes with a whole fig in it and is just to-die-for. There are so many other choices too like the Tinder Special or the Automobile!
