Sydney's Inner West
With great pub food and a relaxed family friendly environment this is a great choice for lunch or dinner. They also have school holiday activities and do a great Mini-Masterchef kids cooking birthday party package!
The Southern Cross Hotel is one of the most friendly pubs around. Brasserie SX is open for lunch and dinner and is a great option for family-friendly dining. They have plenty of specials on during the week including Kids Eat Free on a Saturday!
The Hotel is an excellent option for a great kids birthday party - a Mini-Masterchef Kids Cooking party! They also run school holiday activities.
This is one of the easiest pubs to park with a large car park behind the hotel (access from Canal Road).
Kids eat free every Saturdays with every main meal purchased.
We spent plenty of time at the Southern Cross Hotel last school holidays and loved it. Our kids were dying to go back to the cooking classes again this school holidays (over the last few school hols they made pizza scrolls, chocolate crackles, sausage rolls, and chocolate balls) and brought home their own chefs hats and some of their creations for the family to enjoy), and we are looking forward to another 'parents lunch' on the verandah of the hotel after the class! Great food, reasonably priced.
It's been a little while so we thought we'd check out the Southern Cross again after hearing they've just launched their new menu! Brasserie SX is an inside venue with an outdoor area right beside it, The outdoor area is an excellent place to hang out during the day enjoying lunch in the sun too.
As always, the kids loved it. It's a comfortable place to bring a table full of kids, there's plenty of space, a great outdoor area (smoking is allowed in one part of it and eating up the other end) and they'll find something yummy on the menu. There are high chairs available and our kids were given two great kids activity packs on arrival, plenty of amusement right there with colouring, games and stickers - it's one of the best activity packs we've seen for a while!
The kids menu is small but full of favourites, Chicken Schnitzel, Battered Fish, Cheese Burger or Kids Steak. All are served with fries or vegetables and include a soft drink and an ice-cream for $11.95. The new adults menu is great and extensive! There's plenty to choose from with a huge selection of salads, burgers, pies, pizza, pasta and steak.
We started with the Tomato Brushetta, how can you go wrong with a combination of sourdough, tomato, feta, balsamic and basil? ($10) For main course we chose the Wagyu Beef Burger ($16), served with a tomato relish and a side of fries, it was a really good burger! We also had the Snapper Ceviche ($17) ceviche snapper in an onion creole served on three small soft flour tortillas with a corn salsa, really enjoyable and very light but filling and plenty for a main.
The Southern Cross and Brasserie SX is still an excellent family-friendly option. It's also a great place for a function with a few different spaces available to reserve. The new menu provides plenty of fresh options for summer and we can't wait to try some more of them!
