Sydney's Inner West
Steel Park is located on the Cooks River at Marrickville. It has a fabulous playground, a water play park and everything you need for a riverside BBQ.
This large park, on Illawarra Road adjoins the Cooks River Cycle Path. It includes the Debbie and Abbey Borgia Community Recreation Centre, soccer fields, playground, water play park, outdoor exercise equipment, and many other facilities.
The playground itself is located right next to the covered picnic tables and BBQ facilities. It includes all the usual playground equipment but also has a flying fox which the kids love! The water play park is also a hit and a great way to cool off in summer. It's a clever use of water providing endless entertainment in the form of little rivers and hills, fountains, mists and sprays. At the same time, it uses water collected from the roof of the recreation centre and all water is recycled. A wetland area on the banks of the Cooks River is also used to treat the runoff water before it enters the river.
Toilet facilities are nearby, as are a few coffee shops for a takeaway coffee while you sit in the sun and watch the kids play. The Adora Cafe in Earlwood is near the entrance to the car park, while the Steel Park Cafe is located in the Community Recreation Centre. Across the road from the Centre is Georgia's Kitchen, a fully licenced cafe serving meals, snacks and coffee till the evening hours.
The Magic Yellow Bus visits the park every Wednesday from 9.30am - 12.30pm. This mobile playgroup provides under 5's with story time, activities and selection of toys and games and is a great way to meet other parents and children.
Steel Park is a beautiful spot. Located right on the Cooks River it's an easy place to take little ones especially in summer for a splash around in the water park. It is located on the Cooks River Cycle Path so it's also a nice stopover on a walk from Tempe station along the bike path.
