The General Eatery & Supplies, Dulwich Hill

The General is a young eatery in Sydney’s inner west specialising in produce driven food, coffee and all things alcohol.

This new venue in Dulwich Hill is a great choice for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just pop in for a coffee! The menu is fresh and vibrant, the atmosphere is relaxed and the food is amazing, as is the drinks menu and the whiskey selection!

The General is a new venture by chefs Josh McPhee and Dave Moran who chose a former butcher's shop to transform into their first joint venture (The restaurant still has a butcher sign up high visible from the street). The result is a simple but stylish, relaxed, casual venue.

The General also has a wonderful selection of their own homemade food products - the "Supplies"... think jams, marinades, muesli and sauces.

Breakfast is available from 7am and the lunch menu from midday. Dinner is available Tuesday to Saturday.

KIDsize Living Review

May 2016:

The General is Dulwich Hill's latest addition to what is now a vibrant restaurant scene! We checked it out for Mother's Day and found some excellent food, served by incredibly friendly staff in a wonderful atmosphere.

It was a busy day and they don't take reservations for lunch so we chanced it and turned up early to hopefully snag a table for 8! We didn't wait too long, the place is deceptively large and has two large tables that can seat 10, one outside and one inside. The staff, while pretty busy, were friendly, attentive and patient (we did have four kids with us after all).

The bare brick walls, recycled furniture and open kitchen give this place a cool but relaxed vibe. There's a kind of restaurant-meets-bar feel with a combination of high barstools and regular height tables. That's the beauty of this place, it can be a restaurant, a cafe, a bar or just a wonderful combination of all three! The menu seamlessly slots into this idea, there's vegetarian and vegan options, healthy choices, yummy but not totally healthy choices and a simple, small but totally functional kids menu.

In terms of a visit with the kids in tow - totally easy. Plenty of room for a pram or two, there are tables on the footpath if that's your preference over manoeuvring the pram through the restaurant. The kids menu is totally fine, simple, just like they like it, there's no deep fried "& chips" options which is a total plus in my book.

We ordered the Cuban Sambo, the BBQ Pulled Pork Roll, a Cheeseburger and the Midnight Lamb Sambo - all $14, and all divine! Everyone gave me a bite and it was hard to pick a favourite. They were all so fresh and full of flavour.  We also tried the Ancient Grain Salad ($16), amazingly healthy and so tasty! It had a little crunch surprise with Dukkah Crusted Nuts sprinkled throughout (those nuts are to die for and are for sale in the eatery for just $6). The salad is served in what looks like a silver mixing bowl and feels like they made it for you and sent it straight out of the kitchen in the very same bowl!

The Scrambled Eggs ($5) from the Little General's menu was a good choice, simple, a good size and served with a piece of toast. The older kids ordered cheese burgers from the main menu - hold the relish of course, just cheese and the patty thanks! The kitchen didn't seem to mind the changes and the kids demolished those burgers! The Single Origin coffee was excellent and while we didn't try any of the whiskey offerings this time, the selection is great!

I must mention we were pleasantly surprised by the prices of the homemade products for sale on the "supply shelf". Often these specialty items can be really pricey but they weren't so we did buy a few to sample, as they say you "can't have too many condiments" and we agree! The food was excellent, we'll be back to try out the dinner offerings for sure and maybe some whiskey too!
